Marty Jones  > Birds of Indiana - 321 bird species photographed within the state of Indiana as of May 17, 2013 > Rare, Unexpected, Unusual and Extinct Indiana Birds
This gallery contains the following rare, unexpected, unusual birds I have photographed in Indiana: Curlew Sandpiper, Brown Pelican, Bohemian Waxwing, Asian Hooded Crane, Calliope Hummingbird, Say's Phoebe, Wood Stork, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Western Wood-Pewee, Neotropic Cormorant, Roseate Spoonbill, White Ibis, White-faced Ibis, Black-bellied Whistling Duck, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Bullock's Oriole, Rufous Hummingbird, Western Kingbird, Purple Gallinule, Pure Albino Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Black-necked Stilt, Cinnamon Teal, Monk Parakeet, Townsend's Solitaire, Prairie Falcon, Krider's Red-tailed Hawk, Western Red-tailed Hawk, Harlan's Hawk, Trumpeter Swan, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Tri-colored Heron, and "Oregon" Junco.

I'm also including a White-eyed Vireo as it was a very unexpected find by Alan Bruner and I during the Terre Haute Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on December 17, 2011 . It was the first White-eyed Vireo ever found on an Indiana CBC and the latest Indiana December record by ten days.

Many of the bird species in this gallery are occasionally seen in our state, however the photo's by me and other birders of the Bullock's Oriole, Fork-tailed Flycatcher and Roseate Spoonbill represent the first and only confirmed Indiana records for those species.

I have also included photographed mounts of the extinct Passenger Pigeon and Carolina Parakeet that are on display in the Indiana State Museum. These two birds were once native to Indiana. (Note: Gray Partridge, Eskimo Curlew and Greater Prairie Chicken are also extinct or extirpiated from Indiana). These extinct bird mount photo's are not counted toward my Indiana life bird photo list.

The following is information from Jeff McCoy regarding Roseate Spoonbill in Indiana. Jeff, John Cassidy and Lee Sterrenburg first sighted this Spoonbill on June 2nd however it was not seen again until shortly before this photograph was taken:

"There are several unconfirmed historical reports of this species including
two that were reportedly shot in the spring of 1856 a few miles east of
Vincennes. There was also a second hand report of spoonbills seen, and one
was killed, near Terre Haute several years before 1897. The third report is
of one killed near Portland (Jay County) on July 14, 1889. The specimen was
supposedly preserved by a man at Bryant, IN but it has not been located.
So, pending acceptance by the IBRC, this will be the first confirmed state
record."

"Data from the Mid-continent Rare Birds page from WI Society for Ornithology
(which has been updated through about 2005 for most states) indicates the
following records for the Midwest for Roseate Spoonbill: Illinois (1), Iowa
(2), Kansas (8), Kentucky (2), Missouri (4), Nebraska (4), Ohio (2),
Tennessee (1), and Wisconsin (1). Interestingly, only one of the 25 records
is from the same early summer period as our bird, a 05 June, 1932 record
from NE".
