Calliope Hummingbird, Norma and Dave Jackson residence, 168 West O and M Avenue, North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana, December 26, 2011. First state record. My #303 photographed bird species within the state of Indiana.
The Calliope is the smallest bird found in Canada and the U.S. and the
smallest avian migrant in the world! It spends its winters in Mexico and
is in a genus all it's own! (Stellula). It has been seen in altitudes as
high as 11,000 feet and generally migrates earlier than most birds with
the exception of the Rufous Hummingbird. It was named after the Greek
muse, Calliope. It has been identified in over a dozen eastern U.S.
states, now including Indiana!
