Rare, Unexpected, Unusual or Extinct Indiana Birds
This gallery contains the following rare, unexpected, unusual birds I have photographed in Indiana: Curlew Sandpiper, Brown Pelican, Bohemian Waxwing, Asian Hooded Crane, Say's Phoebe, Wood Stork, Green-tailed Towhee, Western Wood-Pewee, Neotropic Cormorant, Roseate Spoonbill, Glossy Ibis, White Ibis, White-faced Ibis, Black-bellied Whistling Duck, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Bullock's Oriole, Rufous Hummingbird, Western Kingbird, Purple Gallinule, Black-necked Stilt, Cinnamon Teal, Monk Parakeet, Townsend's Solitaire, Prairie Falcon, Trumpeter Swan, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Fish Crow, Tri-colored Heron, Rock Wren, Swallow-tailed Kite, Ferruginous Hawk, Common Ground-Dove, and White-winged Dove.
I'm also including a White-eyed Vireo as it was a very unexpected find by Alan Bruner and I during the Terre Haute Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on December 17, 2011 . It was the first White-eyed Vireo ever found on an Indiana CBC and the latest Indiana December record by ten days.
Many of the bird species in this gallery are occasionally seen in our state, however the photo's by me and other birders of the Bullock's Oriole, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Roseate Spoonbill, Spotted Redshank and Black-tailed Godwit represent the first and only confirmed Indiana records for those species.
I have also included photographed mounts of the extinct Passenger Pigeon and Carolina Parakeet that are on display in the Indiana State Museum. These two birds were once native to Indiana. (Note: Gray Partridge, Eskimo Curlew and Greater Prairie Chicken are also extinct or extirpiated from Indiana). These extinct bird mount photo's are not counted toward my Indiana life bird photo list.
Note: Calliope Hummingbird (Jennings County, Dec 26, 2011) and Barnacle Goose (Eagle Creek Park, March 15, 2014) were not accepted by the Indiana Rare Birds Record Committee and therefore are not counted toward my total. Also not counted are the Red-tailed Hawk subspecies: Western, Harlan's and Krider's Red-tailed Hawks. The "Oregon" Junco and PURE albino Ruby-throated Hummingbird are not counted either. Photo's of all these rarely seen birds can be found in this gallery.
